Wash Your BoatThe first and most simple thing you want to do whenever you are done boating is to wash your boat, especially if you are boating in salt water. It is very important to remove the salt residue from the boat in order to prevent corrosion. It is also important to use the proper soap when washing your boat, you want to use a marine grade boat soap that will not strip the wax from the vessel.

Servicing Your EngineJust like your car, your boat engine is going to have to be serviced and get an oil change. How often you get your motor serviced varies by models; however, a good rule of thumb is to make sure that the motor is serviced every 100 hours. Since boats are exposed to harsh elements and are often run at constant or high RPM’s it is also good to change spark plugs, gear lubricants, oil and fuel filters, and check over the motor for any other issues that might be starting to take place. Your motor is what is going to get you back home from a day out on the water so it is important not to skip out on the maintenance of the motor.

Caring For Motors After Being on the WaterMany outboard motors cool themselves from the water around them with impellers that bring water through the motor. After using your boat for the day it is important to flush the water out of the motor with clean fresh water, especially if you are boating in salt water environments. Some motors like Yamaha have flush attachments on the side of the motor for you to screw your hose into to flush the motor, while others do not and it is important to check service manuals on the proper way to flush your motor. This step is important for preventing saltwater corrosion inside the motor.

Check Your PropellerIf you have an outboard or stern drive boat you should check your propeller each time before launching. Make sure that it is tight on there and that all the appropriate hardware is attached and on tightly. It is also important to check and make sure that there is no fishing line stuck in the propeller. If there is line stuck around the propeller it can lead to damage to the gear case |
